Dental Veneers
What are Dental Veneers?
Veneers are a cosmetic treatment used by dentists in order to hide blemishes and imperfections. For some, discoloured or chipped teeth can affect their confidence when talking or smiling and so dental veneers are a fantastic solution to help this.
A dental veneer is a custom-fit porcelain shell or composite resin covering designed to help hide and correct any damage including: tooth discolouration or stains, tooth decay, tooth chips, and gaps between your teeth.
The Procedure
Dental veneers are a permanent, life-long solution which means they cannot be removed once placed. In order to place a veneer, your dentist will usually remove some of the enamel on your teeth, the outer protective layer. The veneers are then bonded to the front surface of your teeth using a dental cement material.
This treatment is often complete in just 1 visit, after your initial consultation. Your dentist may or may not need to take impressions for your veneers, but this is dependent on the type of veneer of which your dentist will discuss with you.
The Aftercare
Following treatment for veneers, you may find your gums to be a little sore and this is quite normal. Your dentist may then look to see you for a follow up appointment where they will look to ensure your dental veneers are comfortable and have remained in place.
Dental veneers should be treated just like natural teeth, which means your dentist will advise you to maintain good oral hygiene and that certain fluids may stain your teeth, like coffee and red wine. Your dentist will also recommend you avoid:
- Biting your nails
- Biting down on hard objects
- Opening items with your teeth
Whilst a permanent solution, your veneers will need replacing after approximately 10 years if given the right care. This may differ based on the type of veneer you have, which is something your dentist will help you to decide.
Dental veneers are a fantastic cosmetic solution that really can help to improve the appearance of your smile, by hiding discolouration and stains, camouflaging chips and reducing gaps between your teeth.
