Dental Crowns

A broken tooth? Dental Crowns can restore the appearance & strength of your teeth.

What is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a tooth-shaped cover or cap designed to resolve chipped, broken or heavily-filled teeth. This cosmetic dental solution restores strength to your existing tooth, whilst also improving the appearance and shape.

A dental crown can be made from a variety of materials including porcelain, plastic or ceramic. Some dentists will use dental crowns made of porcelain bonded to metal which helps to maximise the strength of the crown.

The Procedure

The process of getting a dental crown for your teeth usually takes 2-3 appointments. This is due to the fact impressions need to be taken in order to create your custom crown.

Whilst your custom crown is being produced, your dentist will fit a temporary crown in order to protect the prepared tooth of which will be in place for approximately 2 weeks.

Your dentist will check your new dental crown’s appearance and size, before providing a local anaesthetic in order to fit and place your new permanent crown.

The Aftercare

After the procedure of having a dental crown fitted, you may experience a little inflammation and sensitivity which should calm down within a few days.

Your dentist may recommend you avoid hard, sticky foods to prevent any movement of your crown and to ensure it remains looking natural. If good oral hygiene is maintained, a dental crown can last between 5-15 years where it may then need replacing.

Summary

Dental crowns are used for a number of reasons including:

  • Protecting a weak tooth
  • Fixing a broken tooth
  • Covering a discoloured tooth
  • Camouflaging a misshapen tooth

Crowns are an excellent option when it comes to improving the appearance and function of your own natural teeth. If you believe you are in need of a dental crown or want to explore your options, speak to your dentist about the best solution for you.
