October is Dental Hygiene Month!
We know how important it is to take good care of our dental hygiene.
Having healthy teeth doesn’t just benefit your smile, but contributes to your physical health and mental wellbeing too.
This Dental Hygiene Month, we’re sharing our top tips for keeping your smile healthy and happy…
Brush twice a day
We know it can feel like a hassle…but brushing for approximately 2 minutes twice per day is key to maintaining good dental hygiene.
If we don’t brush daily, this means we aren’t removing the plaque build up on our teeth. Without removing this plaque, it will continue to build and can lead to gym disease and tooth decay.
Use a Fluoride mouthwash
Fluoride provides our teeth with an extra level of protection. Introducing a fluoride mouthwash can help to clear your mouth, as well as help to stop plaque build-up on our gums, in between and on the surface of our teeth.
When incorporating a fluoride mouthwash into our daily routine, it should be used alongside our daily brushing and not as a substitute.
Flossing your teeth
Again, we know flossing can feel like a chore…but flossing between our teeth before brushing has actually proven to have its benefits.
Flossing, the action of cleaning between our teeth, loosens and removes food debris and bacteria from between our teeth which then leads to a much more successful brush, when it comes to removing plaque.
Ultimately flossing before brushing leaves our teeth and mouth much cleaner, than if we didn’t, leading to better dental hygiene.
Spit after you brush
Find you always rinse your mouth after brushing your teeth? We’re here to break the news that we should, in fact, spit out our toothpaste.
By rinsing out your mouth, this washes away the fluoride from the toothpaste which helps to protect our teeth.
Fluoride toothpaste is key to good dental hygiene, because it strengthens and protects our tooth enamel which is what makes our teeth resistant to decay.
So instead of rinsing your mouth and removing that fluoride, spit instead to ensure the fluoride stays on your teeth and continues to do its job!
Visit your dentist
Keep on top of your 1-1 check ups with your dentist to ensure you maintain excellent dental hygiene. We recommend a visit every 6 months to 1 year for a check-up, to ensure that your teeth are in top condition and require no other treatment.
